A monthly cultural studies session hosted by university lecturer and author Viriya Sawangchot. This month will on singer, songwriter, Morrisey.
Screening starts at 8pm and will be followed by a casual discussion.
THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING MORRISSEY
A documentary made on Steven Patrick Morrissey in 2002. He is an English singer, songwriter and author, professionally know as Morrissey. Morrissey rose to prominence as the lead singer of Manchester post-punk band The Smiths, which was active from 1982 to 1897. Since then he has also performed as a solo artist. In this documentary, he compares meat eating to child abuse, responds to the accusation of racism; attacks the British government and we hear about his depression. There is some The Smiths’ concert footage and a mixed selection of celebrity fans who explain their opinions on Morrissey.
VIRIYA SAWANGCHOT
A cultural researcher based in Bangkok, Thailand. He was an API senior fellow (2013-2014), Asian Public Intellectual program, Nippon Foundation, and has previously taught in Cultural Studies program, Research Institute for Languages and Cultures of Asia, Mahidol University, Thailand.
