Outline

We all do it! When kicking off a new project, web developers inevitably start creating data models and web views in their favorite web framework in order to get demonstrable systems working fast. For any non-trivial application this inevitably results in a tight coupling of business logic with the web framework.

Ben Scherrey argues that there needs to be a clear separation of business logic (preferably written in the core language with as few dependencies as possible) from your favorite web framework which is really just one of many likely interfaces your system will need to expose to its stakeholders.

The value of maintaining this separation includes faster delivery, more correct code, and easier maintainability & extensability. Examples and counter-examples will be given in Python/Django but are probably even more relevant to Ruby/Rails, PHP/Wordpress, and the rare Elixir/Phoenix devs.

About Benjamin Scherrey

Benjamin Scherrey started his first business in 1989 quite by accident. Known for being able to deliver complex computing systems into operation under tight deadlines with high reliability; he discovered that most of his efforts were focused on building the development model, team and infrastructure rather than actual programming. Since then he has built software development groups for other companies around the world until finally starting his own, Proteus Technologies. His focus is on identifying strong talent and carrying fresh concepts to implementation. As an architect, Ben introduced Agile processes and methodologies to companies around the world.
