MATDOT Art Center, in collaboration with "Gimgoanheng," presents the exhibition "City Pattern: Textile Designs by Yang Tzu Hsing and the Story of Gimgoanheng." This exhibition showcases textile designs, photographs, and historical records by Taiwanese textile designer Yang Tzu Hsing, the fourth-generation heir of the 101-year-old fabric store "Gimgoanheng." The exhibition delves into the transmission of Taiwanese textile culture from various perspectives.
As a textile designer, Hsing transforms diverse aspects of Taiwanese culture into vibrant pattern designs, with each pattern revealing a unique Taiwanese story. Additionally, as the current owner of Gimgoanheng, Hsing celebrates the store’s 101st anniversary by presenting 101 photographs taken in Tainan, capturing the city’s essence from a pattern designer’s point of view. The exhibition also features family photographs and historical records of Gimgoanheng.
In addition, the exhibition offers merchandise for sale through a collaboration, titled “GGH x MATDOT." During his visit in early August and through our various media, the artist was inspired to create a design concept titled "Outer/Inner." This concept explores the interplay between external and internal perspectives, both physically and conceptually. The resulting designs are rich with imagery inspired by the artist's exploration of MATDOT’s space, from the architectural features of the building to the artworks previously exhibited in the gallery.
